From Juggling to Harmony: How Women Solopreneurs Can Reclaim Their Time

I was sitting on a plane, watching the flight attendants go through their pre-flight instructions (even though I know what they’ll say, I think it’s rude not to pay attention), when our flight attendant remarked that we should put on our oxygen masks first before helping anyone else. And she followed her comment with something like, “Like we should be doing in life.”

The Unique Challenges of a Woman Solopreneur

This isn’t a new analogy: you have to care for yourself before caring for others, but I believe that we women aren’t very good about taking care of ourselves. We have our jobs and our personal lives that we’re juggling, and like any juggling act, if we accidentally drop one ball, the rest come crashing down. Then we’re left with picking them up and trying to restart our juggling.

Women are constantly given messages about the importance of “balance” in our lives. Balance means a condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions.

This is a great goal, but it’s difficult to achieve. How is it possible to “balance” and give equal attention to everything in our lives?

And it’s especially difficult for women entrepreneurs who must juggle their business with their personal life.

Solopreneurship requires more time and effort because a solo owner must be secretary, networker, marketer, employee, bookkeeper, and tax accountant. And these roles often cost you personal time.

Balance or Harmony: What Do Women Want?

Maybe we’re thinking about a work/life balance all wrong. Maybe it’s not “balance” we’re seeking.

Maybe it’s harmony.

Harmony is defined as a state of inner peace and alignment where different aspects of your being (mind, body, spirit) and your external life (relationships, work, values) blend into a pleasing, coherent whole, emphasizing balance, purpose, and connection rather than just juggling tasks.

Consider the notion of a work/life harmony

The ability to blend your work and your life proportionally without feeling like you’re juggling everything poorly, but achieving harmony: not in fitting the pieces together perfectly, but in allowing the ebb and flow of the important pillars of our lives to exist cohesively.

It sounds like a dream, but is it realistic? The answer is yes!

Sure, there are the usual suggestions of scheduling time for yourself, setting boundaries, or being firm about your time management. But do those really work for you or make you work?

So What’s the Solution?

Instead, think of the task–or tasks–that suck your time and energy. Maybe they’re tasks you procrastinate.

Is it your overflowing inbox? Writing your newsletter or blog? Updating your website? Something else?

Procrastinating those tasks–you know this–just makes you feel overwhelmed when you think about them.

Your solution is to hire a virtual assistant to handle those tasks you avoid because they suck up your time and energy.

What if you could have five hours a month to do what you want–or need–to do, while your work still gets done?

That sounds like sweet harmony to me.

Final Thoughts

If the image of putting on your oxygen mask first resonated with you, pause for a moment and ask yourself: when was the last time you truly gave yourself room to breathe?

Harmony isn’t about perfectly portioning every hour of your day. It’s about creating space—mental, emotional, and practical space—so your business supports your life rather than consuming it. When you continue to carry every responsibility alone, you aren’t proving your strength; you’re draining your energy.

Delegating isn’t a luxury. It’s leadership.

When you hand off the tasks that exhaust you—your inbox, newsletters, blog posts, website updates—you reclaim time, clarity, and focus. You gain hours back each month to think strategically, serve your clients well, and maybe even rest without guilt.

At A Writer’s Ink Virtual Assistance, we believe women entrepreneurs deserve more than survival mode. You deserve sustainable success. You deserve support. You deserve harmony.

So go ahead—put your oxygen mask on first. Then build your business from a place of strength, not depletion.
